These crescent wrapped dogs that most of us know from our childhood are so much fun. Kiddo’s first experience with Crescent Wrapped Dogs was when we were invited to a friend’s house for dinner and games. He was maybe nine or ten at the time and thought these were the greatest invention since sliced bread. Up until that summer, Kiddo did not know about Crescent Wrapped Dogs. Oh, he knew about hamburgers and hot dogs – it wasn’t as though he were completely deprived as a child. He also knew five-star restaurants and gourmet meals at home. When he was in cub scouts, he earned a badge for preparing a meal for his troop. Kiddo elected to made one of his favorite dishes – Italian Chicken Scampi, served with a salad and garlic bread. As Kids go, some might consider him an odd duck. I’ve mentioned this before, Kiddo is our grandson. He has been a part of our lives since birth. While we did our best to expose him to the childhoods we had known (big on family), he was also exposed to the adult world. When Kiddo was about three or so, I sent him off to preschool prepare him for a world of children. Up until then, his was a world filled with adult interaction and therefore his behavior for the most part was that of a very short adult. For the first three years of his life, Kiddo’s only real exposure to children had been limited to our annual camp-outs at the farm. I wanted him to be familiar with a classroom setting and spending time with children his age before beginning school. I’ll never forget his first day of preschool. On the drive home, I asked him what he thought of “school”.
“Since you asked.” He replied slowly, giving the question much thought. “It is interesting. They are short and behave strangely. One of them actually ate paste and apparently none of them seem to know very much.” I laughed, explaining that those were children. While Kiddo eventually settled in with the rest of his classmates and formed friendships over the years, he never fully understood what made his peers tick as it were, and tended to seek out the company of adults over people his own age. I remember once during a parent-teacher conference; the teacher said Kiddo’s vocabulary was beyond his years and that the other children did not always understand him. It would “help” his social standing if he used smaller words. I was not pleased.
Oh wow – that was a bit off-topic . . . back to the recipe at hand.
The most common way to serve Crescent Wrapped is to wrap a dog in a triangle, starting with the wide end first, rolling to the point. Some people like to put a slice of cheese with the dog. While these are delicious, quick and easy, part of the dog – usually the ends – are “exposed”. That’s okay. The first time Kiddo had a crescent wrapped dog, that’s how they were served.
I like to encase the entire dog, brush the wrap with a little egg wash (for that nice, golden finish) and sprinkle my dogs with a little sesame seed to dress them up a bit. I love to serve the dogs with little tins of “dip”. My little tins are the perfect size for easy dipping and you can fit several tins on a single plate.
Crescent Wrapped Dogs
2 Package Crescent Rolls (8 rolls per can)
8 Bun Length or Foot-Long Dogs (Favorite)
1 Tablespoon Water
2 Tablespoons Sesame Seeds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly spray baking sheet and set aside until ready to use.
Open first can of Crescent Rolls. Separate rolls to create 4 rectangles, 2 rolls per dog. Pinch perforation together to seal. Roll one dog at a time in rectangle, pinching ends to seal over dogs. Repeat with second can of Crescent Rolls.
In a small bowl, whisk egg with water. Brush tops of crescents with wash, then sprinkle with Sesame Seed.
Place crescent wrapped dogs seam-side down on baking sheet.
Bake dogs for 10-15 minutes, until golden and delicious.
Condiments for Dipping – per person/dog
1/4 Cup Nacho Cheese Dip (optional – warm)
1/4 Cup Spicy Deli-Style Mustard
1/4 Cup Ketchup
1/4 Cup Barbecue Sauce
Place dipping condiments into little cups or bowls.
To serve, place wrapped dogs on a tray with dipping sauces; let people pick and choose sauces for dipping. Can be served with chips on the side. A nice dill pickle is also good.
