Quirky Things We Like to Eat

Okay folks, let’s all fess up – what strange, quirky foods do you like to eat when no one is looking – you know the stuff I’m talking about – concoctions from your childhood that you made up or when you were a teenager that you still eat every now and then as an adult. For a while as a teenager I ate tuna fish sandwiches made with yellow mustard. Not because I liked the taste of tuna with yellow mustard, but because mustard isn’t as fattening as mayonnaise and we all know how teenage girls (even skinny ones) worry about body image.

Sometimes for breakfast I like a tall glass of milk with smashed Ritz Crackers. It’s sort of like cereal – only salty and eaten from a glass. Sometimes I’ll actually pack a Bread and Butter Pickle and Mayonnaise Sandwich.  It’s a throwback from when I was expecting my daughter. There’s something about the crunchy sweetness of the pickles and the creamy mayo between two slices of bread that just hit the spot on a warm summer afternoon.

All week I’ve been craving a sandwich that I’ve loved for as long as I can remember. It’s not something to pack in your lunch pail because it needs to be consume promptly – cold would be icky. It’s not something I would make for the family because they look at me strangely on those occasions when the craving out weights common sense. (Actually, Hubby looks at me as if to say what planet are you from – while Kiddo joins me when he’s in the right mood – he likes my strange sandwich). Tonight it was just me – Kiddo bowed out – opting for Corn Dogs and Tater Tots instead. When he saw that I was actually taking pictures, he laughed – are you out of your mind kind of chuckle.

Some of us are brave enough to post our mistakes. Some of us are nuts enough to reveal our quirky side.

Scrambled Egg and Vienna Sausage Sandwich
1 can Vienna Sausage
1 tablespoon Butter
2 Eggs
2 Slices Bread spread with mayonnaise
Pepper to taste

Open can of Vienna Sausage and empty into a skillet, liquid and all. Add butter and fry up over medium heat until almost all of the liquid has evaporated.

Cut sausage in the pan into bite-size pieces.

Add two eggs to the skillet. Scramble eggs, mixing with sausage.

Spread mayonnaise on bread. Pile on the scrambled eggs and Vienna Sausage. Season with a little pepper to taste.

Top with second slice of bread and serve at once.

I’d love to hear from you – what are your strange food combinations? Come on now, we all have our little quirks . . .

  1. Okay, I admit, I grew up eating Vienna sausage and scrambled eggs. I can’t say in my adult life I’ve ever had a craving for this though. I guess if I had a quirky thing it would be a cream cheese and grape jelly sandwich (on white bread of course). I actually can’t stand grape jelly anymore but somehow with the cream cheese it brings me back my childhood. Thanks for the memory.

    • Vienna Sausage and Scrambled Eggs were a part of my childhood, too. While the craving for a sandwich version of this childhood dish doesn’t come often (thank goodness!) when it does, I’ve gotta feed the need. Grape Jelly and cream cheese – yeah, that’s quirky.
